Dr. Bob, It's been five years. I came to your office on a Friday afternoon not yet having let in that the UCLA oncology department had given me an estimated life expectancy of eighteen month during which I would subside in pain. Rather I listen to your approach, took in a great sense of your competenceas you talked with MDs in distant offices and started me on an immediate path of control of the cancer. I went home and told Bonnie of the cancer with a full sense that I would be able to write this note of appreciation five years later. It did not take long before I accepted your characterization as "compassionate." • You listened, you explained, informed, and were available as I need counseling. • Your office was a friendly place, for the very few minutes I would stay im the "Waitmg room," the prompt intake in the examination rooms, and eventually the restful atmosphere in the IV salon. • The tone of the relations with your professional staff - originally Andie and Ray - Now with Mary and Lydia and others, and the office staff with Joni and Teresa and many others over the years. They have been most helpful and responsive to my concerns - providmg the intimate information that surrounds the formal advice that comes from "authority," as well at the latest score in my games with the virulent little tumors. • You continued to inform me of how the treatment was proceeding and of your research into improved methods. I value your engagement with the newest technologies, drugs, and therapies - that you are so engaged and pas that on to us, your patients. I cannot estimate how much I, Bonnie, and my family owe to you, as a person and a professional I pray that you can continue to deliver your wisdom and good practice to patients around the world and contribute your data to the knowledge base of oncology. With deepest appreciation. Will |

Dear Dr. Leibowitz In January of 1998 I was diagnosed with Prostate Cancer. At that time my doctors here in Hawaii told me that the cancer had spread throughout my body, that tumors were growing on my bones, and that the disease had gone too far to operate. They told me I should get my affairs in order as I had eighteen to twenty-four months to live. At the age of 55, and having the business I had started become quite successful, along with having a wonderful family, and really enjoying my life, I was very shocked. I immediately went to other doctors in the Mainland U.S. for other opinions. Fortunately, you were recommended to me. While I was seeing other doctors on the mainland, I was fortunate enough to be given some of your articles by a close friend. I read the articles and made an appointment with you. By that time I had received multiple opinions, and they were basically all the same as the original diagnosis. By then I was trying to figure out how to sell my company, and live out the last few months of my life. My initial meeting with you was the first bright light that I had. Not only did you spend the time explaining to me what you do, and the incredible success you have had, you encouraged me to go on building my company, and even taking it public if I so desired. I started on your treatment approximately two years ago. After the first round of triple blockade, etc., my cancer was in remission. Now, two years later, I am back on the triple blockade and the chemotherapy. This time instead of starting out with a PSA of approximately 700, we started out with a PSA of approximately 95. This time the PSA has dropped very rapidly (in 30 days) down to 1.5. I am sure you will have it completely in remission very soon. The best part of all, is that as I have been going through your treatments I have felt very good, I have not had any hair loss, or other visible side effects, and I have continued to enjoy being with my family and traveling extensively. I have also been able to continue my full load of work running my company, during which time our sales have gone up over 500 percent, and our profits have increased by over 900 percent. You have made the treatment flexible enough that I have been able to have the majority of the treatment here in Hawaii, while visiting your office approximately once per month while I am visiting my sales offices in the Mainland. It is now over two years since my original diagnosis and I feel better than ever. We have just committed to a new project that will take approximately ten years to completely build out and sell. From the bottom of my heart I want to thank you for your dedication to your profession, and your dedication to your patients. Your knowledge, results, and extremely positive attitude are truly life saving. Since my first visit to your office I have had a very positive mental attitude, and no-one in my company has realized that I have cancer, and that I have been going through the treatment. I have been able to continue doing all the things I enjoy, and most importantly I have had the time and energy to spend with my daughter as she is growing up (she is now twelve years old). Enclosed is a new book on Kauai. I would certainly like to invite you and your family to come over anytime to stay as our guest at any of the resorts we have built here. This is just a small token of our appreciation for everything you have done. Keep up the good work. God bless you. Sincerely, |

Dear Dr. Bob, Thank you, thank you, and many more thanks for your saving of my life. Susan and I are deeply grateful for your compassionate care and we feel a wonderful kinship with you. Through your efforts we each have grown on a personal level dramatically. Without your and Susan's determination to bring me come back to the living world, I could never have made it. Thank you again. It would be my pleasure to be available to you as a spokesman any time. I would love assisting you in any ways possible. I'm still looking for the Erte number one plate. They are difficult to locate, but I'm going to keep after it. One of the wonderful aspects of your treatment for me is your incredible staff. Each person, especially Ande and Ray are loving and caring in very special ways. Again we are deeply grateful for their commitment as well. This is the first time I've actually sat down to the computer since last March, and it really feels good to start communicating again. Be healthy, be well, and prosper. David |

Dear Dr. Bob Year-end, new year reflection leads me to marvel at mycircumstance sixteen months after stopping Lupron/Eulexin, my PSA is unmeasurable! I wish to let you know that Marian and I fully understand and appreciate the remarkable care you give me and the other patients I've met in your office. Every source of informtion about prostate cancer treatment - publications, conferences, print and television reports - confirms that your knowledge and treatment of the disease are far in advance of that of your colleagues. Our hearfelt thanks for the care and consideration I have received. Happy New Year, Ray |

Dr. Bob, How do I attempt to express my feelings about how you aided in my successful battle with prostate cancer? More, certainly than words can express. The thirteen month regimen of triple hormone blockade was smooth compared to the alternative choices. To state that I'm thankful for your medical acumen is not enough, your willingness to "stay the course" with a new regimen is what is meaningful to me. I am proud to have been a part of this endeavor and proud to continue with the ongoing participation in this vital area of drug research therapy. My trust is that your zeal for a painless, manageable solution to prostate cancer will never falter. Sincerely, Bob |

Dear Dr. Leibowitz This is a very late Thank You Letter. I've always appreciated the fact that you saved my life in 1984. I don't know if you realize the more important factor, quality of life and respect for each and every human being who passes through your doors. What is life if it has no meaning, no value? My recent move to Florida has exposed me to health care for the masses. People are not individuals any longer. They herd them around like cattle. I realize that a large portion of this is due to the insurance system, but I also have to blame doctors and nurses. Dr. Bob, you have always put your patients first. You remember a persons name and take the time to hear their concerns. Your staff has always made each patient feel that they were special. Many times, over the past nineteen years, I have wanted to write a letter to go into one of your books. Somehow, I never got around to it. If I had put on paper, what I thought in my head, you would have received a letter of praise every day since March 1984. Thank you for being you. Lou and I truly regard you as a true and glorious physician. You and your staff will always be in our thoughts and prayers. With Unaltered Affection, Donna |

Dear Bob How does one say thank you for the 2 biggest gifts of Life? #1. The first gift I thank you for is you. Your kind gentle spirit overwhelms me. Forever I will remember your patient ways of allowing me to speak. Your consideration of just listening to me as well as hearing me is as unbelievable as you are. #2. The 2nd gift you have had to give me is "The Gift of Time." This gift is so wonderful as is you, your doctor skills, and your heart. As long as I live I will enjoy The Gift of Time. Thank you Bob. When you will wear this gift you will remember as look at time that I am living proof of your gift. Thank You, Love, - |

Greeting’ s
Everyone, It is hard to believe but since I have made it through another year, I am really thankful to so many friends, family, and loved ones. I thank all of you for your patience and understanding. And I wish you the most joyous of times for the rest of the holdiays and a special evening as the hour of the new year approaches. I especially wish each and every one of you a healthy, safe and prosperous new year. And where would I be without Dr. Robert Leibowitz? He has been the saving grace for me for nigh on ten years. And I’m not even his best patient. If I followed his protocol more closely, I would be in even better condition. And of course, what would I have done without my dearly beloved Letty? She has been the Rock of Gilbraltar for me throughout my ordeals. However, this is a time to rejoice. So have at it and celebrate. Have A Happy.. . . For Sure Tom |

Dear Dr. Leibowitz: Just a note of thanks and recognition. My P.S.A. had been rising at a rate of 20% per week to a high of 184. My recent chemo has reduced it to 144 and still falling. “My first doctor said you won’t be alive at 65, my present doctor says you’ll still be alive at 75, 85 would have rhymed too, but I didn’t want to put the pressure on you.” Although I am a minor player in the overall scheme of things, you’ve always put my situation first with custom treatment when I needed it, including the day before chemo. When you worked at the office, delivered your blockbuster paper “High Testosterone Replacement Therapy,” met your friends, went home and worked on my case. My case is merely typical; you’ve had an uphill battle for years against respected peers and organizations with more resources and name recognition, how could you possibly be right? Well, you’ve received grudging recognition from some pretty high places and of course imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. Even if some of them think that things like “intermittent hormone therapy” and “triple hormone blockage” were obvious from the beginning. They’re right! It was obvious to an intrepid genius skilled in the art. But this letter is not really about your accomplishments, your patients have experienced this first hand. I want to acknowledge your personal qualities which I think were formed long before you entered medical school. You have a strong sense of urgency, compassion, high intellect, ambition and a high moral character. You must have had wonderful parents with strong moral values. When the training phase of your life ended, you had to choose between two paths; the obvious one with many turns which was crowded but very lucrative, or straight ahead which provided a good income (if you worked hard) and was easier for you because you didn’t have to rearrange your moral values. You now have something others with hundreds of millions of dollars can't buy with their charity balls etc., geniune deep admiration, gratitude and self resepct from your patients and others who know you well. You and Dr. Tucker are indeed modern day Lewis and Clark paddling upstream against natural hazards and hostile forces. Dr. Bob: Live long, prosper, and be happy! You taught me to do that and made it possible. Gratefully, Donald R. Strack You may use this letter with or without my name. |

This letter is to
acknowledge the wonderful staff support enjoyed by Dr. Leibowitz and
his patients. Mary is an extension of Dr. Bob. I call her doctor #2 (she is to me). She is living proof that you can be beautiful an.d smart. Andee - extremely reliable and helpful, she has bailed me out of more jams than anyone. Always available, efficient, helpful and cheerful, I couldn’t get by without her. She still finds time to write novels for publication, she is one smart lady. Ray — amazing in his eclectic skills, he is Dr. Bob’s longest term employee. He heads up the nerve center of the operation. Carefulness and accuracy are his by-words. Unfortunately, I don’t get to see him as much as I would like. I do get to see plenty of his work which l do like. Lillie — we couldn’t do without her, unfortunately it seems that every time I see her she wants money. I guess it’s not her fault that my medical insurance is inadequate. She does a great job dealing with the stresses of collecting from the great bureaucracy “Medicare” and others. I could not deal with it: it would drive me mad. She is always smiling even when she is collecting my money. Lydia — efficient and intelligent, she has beauty that won’t quit. Although I’m approximately three times her age, she reminds me of my Mother. She does double duty rearing two beautiful children plus performing her stressful nursing job with great results. My Mother was divorced when I was five and worked two jobs to keep the family together. I appreciated her more and more after I got a family of my own. Edgar — one of the newest members of the staff, he has become one of my best friends. He is a quick study as evidenced by his football career and his daily work. As fullback he was chosen as captain over the upperclassmen. I predict that he will be the fastest rising member of the staff. The receptionist always pleasant and efficient, she is the tip-off that this is no ordinary Oncology Office. Compassionate Oncology is a wonderful place to come to, strange as that may seem. It is made so by not only the persons mentioned in this letter, but also the rest of the staff who I mostly see walking down the halls. Sincerely and thankfully, Donald |

Dear Doctor Bob: This is a letter of gratitude. It was just a year ago today that you accepted me as one of your prostate cancer patients to receive tri-hormonal blockcade treatment. I am also grateful that you made it possible for my brother-in-law, Ralph ----, to get the same excellent treatment from Dr. Tucker. We greatly appreciate you and Dr. Tucker in your exceptional pioneering practice which is way out on the front of the growing edge of treatment of prostate canter, in all its manifestations, tailored to the need of each patient. You are continually following the research in order to make available te your patients the most recently developed medicines effective in the treatment of prostate cancer. It has been most helpful that you regularly share papers you have written and copies of the latest journal articles. It is impressive that you take the time to explain them for my understanding. Though your practice is keeping you quite busy, you make yourself available when we need you. That is very much appreciated. I have had the privilege of being treated by many fine medical doctors through the years, but you are by far the most thorough, and in my estimation, the best. I am very thankful to be one of your patients. Sincerely, Gene |

Dear Dr. Bob, Happy Anniversary!! It is twenty years this month that I first walked into your office. I knew I had Breast Cancer and I was one frightened lady. Thanks to you, I’m still here. I was going to send you an anniversary card, but couldn’t find one that was appropriate. Part of the reason Lou and I were both apprehensive was because of my past history of bleeding. It seemed to be a major problem that no one else could solve. Thanks to you, I get the proper treatment before any surgical procedure. I often reflect on those days of surgery, chemo, and hospitalizations. You were always the “rock” in a sea of pebbles. You had, and have, my respect and trust. I truly miss you and the staff at Compassionate Oncology. I’m being well taken care of here in Winter Haven. Florida. I go to The Bond Clinic in town. I was going to The Moffitt Cancer Center in Tampa, but I prefer the small town, personal care at Bond. Moffitt is to big. It is associated with The University of Florida. The Oncologist at Bond does my check-ups and his office flushes my port. Anyway, I just wanted to say, “Hello”, and let you know I’m thinking about you on this momentous occasion. Give my regards to Ray and everyone in the office. I trust that your success rate is still soaring and the map on the wall has many more pins in place. Lou and I think of you often. We are forever grateful to you for saving my life. You have our prayers and best wishes. With unaltered affection, Donna and Louie |

Dear Dr. Leibowitz, Thank you for treating my father, Donald ----. Don’s case was difficult because of the extent the cancer had spread and because of his peculiar response to treatments. You accepted the challenge and proceeded to conduct individualized, innovative medical care, always accompanied by a sense of urgency. Your work produced outstanding results in the destruction of the cancer, and in the improvement of my father’s attitude and quality of life. Don extolled your original thinking and your genius almost every time we spoke. He championed the ideas of intermittent hormone therapy and triple hormone blockade to all concerned. Don had complete confidence in your methods and the utmost respect for you as a man. Dr. Leibowitz, your determination, genius, and great humanity combined to produce the best possible result. Dear Dr. Bob, I am really excited about the two video tapes "Prostate Cancer Survivor Series All Stars" and what is equally important the slides in a high quality format. If you allow, this will be transformed into a leaflet in German language similar to that what was produced from your presentation here in Germany. The Series All Stars presentation closes the complete cycle. Your THB was initially criticised openly (Prof. Ebert, almost 3 years ago, published in the web site of Takeda), not so much because of the principal therapy approach but because the of the question left open, what about a follow-on therapy for patients who would need it later. We knew what you would recommend in cases of higher risk groups. Quite often we recommend to contact your office in such cases. This worked in some cases, other did not have the money or the guts to oppose the conservative urological wide spread opinion. We know you are one of the rare physician, may be even the only one in the world to oppose explicitly and openly the urological radical and therefore damaging therapy approaches especially for early prostate cancer. Such a position must be an integral part of our (patients organisation) request for a PSA screening for early detection. Your line of treatment was never put together in such a clarity as it is done now in the All Stars Series. There are some oncologists and very few urologists who will welcome this complete cycle of treatment explained in your presentation. Thank you very much. |

Dear Dr. Leibowitz: I don't know if you are interested in an anecdotal case or not but I am so pleased with the treatment outcome, I thought I would write to you anyway. I was diagnosed with prostate cancer in July of 1996 with a PSA of 6.08 Gleason Score 4. My urologist would offer me only a radical prostatectomy and was very dogmatic about doing it. Even though I hadn't heard of your Triple Hormone Blockade treatment at that time, I would not agree to have the operation. So I held off for over a year until my PSA got to 8.3, but by that time I had read in the Paact letter about your Triple Hormone Blockade treatment. To my urologists credit he reluctantly prescribed the drugs I needed Lupron, flutamide and proscar. I started treatment 12/02/97 and by 03/27/98 my PSA was 0.05 and stayed there for at least 12 months. On 02/10/01 my PSA was 1.58 and slowly rising, but on 05/30/01, it came back at 1.40. So I am hoping this is the second plateau. I ahve been neglectful in getting enough PSA tests to know for sure but in any event I am confident I'm getting the desired results. I won't bother you with any more details but I would like to say that I think there should be a congressional investigation to know why every man with prostate cancer isn't given the option to choose your treatment. Keep up the good work. Sincerely, William |

Just a fan letter to
let you know what a terrific program you presented at the Fullerton
Prostate
Meeting last week. I was the family representative because George was
still recovering from his
back surgery and shouldn’t sit for more than 30 minutes at a
time. The surgery has eliminated all
the pain in the back of his legs and has improved the
“numbness” in his feet and calves and both of
us are very pleased. I arrived at the church early so was able to find
a good parking space and
seat. For about a quarter of the program, I sat next to Jafria
(spelling??) and not only is she
VERY attractive but has a good sense of humor. Because I wanted to hear
the remarks from the
attendees I moved to different seats several times. I really liked the approach that you took - you began by addressing the more advanced stage that most of the men were in - not Prostate 101 but Prostate 501. Every subject/slide was very easily understood and moved at a pace that the audience could absorb the data. If I could have changed anything it would be that at least half the audience could have been in the 30 thru 50 year old range. When and if men, especially in this group, have a PSA that attracts the urologists attention, they do not have the knowledge that there are options to this disease. Keep writing for the Men’s Health, etc. because you may reach some of them. As I was roaming thru the group, I would hear comments like, “Boy, that makes sense.” “Why haven’t I ever been told about this?” “He tells it like it is” “PC Specs did that to me too” the slides of patients’ graphs also indicated the value of tracking the PSA reading and having a doctor that can interpret all of the information and will take the time to apply it to the individuaL You ended on an upbeat note which was well received. You did a great job and I give you an Oscar for the Prostate Academy Award. Thanks so much. |

Dear Bob: Perhaps you vaguely remember my name as an ex-patient of yours over 20 years ago. You treated me for several years for intraductal carcinoma, Stage IV from which it was never believed that I would recover. Surprisingly today I am still in remission, never having had a recurrence. A year or two after you decided to leave your practice on Ventura Blvd. I stopped seeing oncologists on my own volition. I had always wanted to express my appreciation and on a few occasions during the past two decades, I checked the San Fernando Valley telephone book to see if you had resumed your practice here but that did no appear to be the case. I presume that you may be currently practicing in Los Angeles. However, this letter is not about what you are currently doing, it is about my profound gratitude for your competence and caring. While I was your patient, you had the perspicacity to make several important decisions on my behalf, which not only affected the course of my disease but also removed me from chemotherapy after two years, to be followed by a year of Tamoxifen. Even the now called “Hepatitis C” I contracted from blood transfusions prior to being treated by you, and which you later diagnosed, presently do not affect my liver functions. I was a young mother then of 39-40. As a result of your skilled intervention, I was able to bring up my children (both of who are now physicians), return to my professional career and be a companion to my husband who unfortunately a decade later died prematurely of well-differentiated hepatoma. My life at the time was very vital and of extreme importance to others. For these reasons I would particularly like to thank you for your professional intervention which was intelligent, acutely aware, knowledgeable and compassionate. I will always be grateful for what you did on my behalf and I wanted you to know that one physician can unquestionably make a difference. You will always enjoy a special place in my thoughts. Sincerely yours, Faye |

Dear Dr. Leibowitz, I am going to get right to the point. I miss you very much! I hope you are well and doing what you do so well, "caring for people." I can't believe I have lived long enough to start (for quite some time now) feeling the signs of "old age." Truly, the eye sight was the first to go... =) Leslie and I are going to Arnold, CA from the 19th-26th to enjoy a week with my sister and her family (my precious 4yr old nephew and 10 yr neice). I hope your family is well. ... Love, Linda D. |

Dear Dr. Bob, Just received the latest Prostate Forum Notice and was delighted to see your name mentioned as co-speaker here in fullerton, Wed. Jan. 28th P.M. (notice enclosed) My name is Jerry --- I am on your mailing list. Your mailings have given me the strength not to be "cut, burned or poisoned." It's been a battle not to give in to everyone around me to accept the norm in treatment of Prostate Cancer. Hormone Blockade is the route I've chosen. (Intermittent) Six months on treatment, six months off. PSA is rising but still under 10. Looking forward to meeting you and shaking your hand. Thank you for your diligent research and your sharing of knowledge. It has given me the moral support to continue on. If I may be of service to you, please do not hesitate to call upon me. Jerry |

Proof I'm being looked after by the Divine Spirit. How blessed I am! May your holidays bring you peace and may your heart be filled with love. Many Thanks, Peace and Love, Pamela |

Dear Dr. Leibowitz, I would first like to wish you a wonderful holiday season and hope the new year brings you much health and happiness! There are truly not enough words to express our gratitude for what you have done for my mother. When I question all the studying and work I do to become a physician, I remind myself of you and all the hope, joy, and gratitude you bring to those who are at their worst. I can only hope that I become even half the physician you are. I thank you again for everything! Sincerely, Ann and the ---- family |
