Lung Cancer Treatment Q & A

What is lung cancer?

Lung cancer starts in the cells that line your bronchi, the tubes that carry air into your lungs. Cancerous cells can also grow in the bronchioles, the smaller branches of these tubes, or the alveoli, the tiny air sacs that absorb oxygen from your blood and help remove carbon dioxide.

There are two main types of lung cancer:

Small cell lung cancer

Small cell lung cancers account for about 10%-15% of all lung cancers. This type of cancer grows and spreads faster than non-small cell lung cancers. While it’s treatable, there’s a high likelihood the cancer will return after treatment.

Non-small cell lung cancer

Non-small cell lung cancer is the most common type of lung cancer. These cancers then break down into other classifications – adenocarcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, and large cell carcinoma.

  • Adenocarcinoma – starts in the cells that secrete mucus in people who smoke or have a history of smoking. This type of lung cancer is also common in people who don’t smoke, especially women.
  • Squamous cell carcinomas – start in the flat cells (squamous cells) that line the airways of your lungs. Most common in people with a history of smoking.
  • Large cell carcinoma – can start in any part of the lung and grows and spreads quickly.

Compassionate Oncology Medical Group also offers diagnostic testing and treatment services for mesothelioma, a malignant (cancerous) tumor that develops in those who work with or around asbestos. Inhaling the fibers can cause tumors to grow in the lining of the lungs, heart, or abdomen.

What are the symptoms of lung cancer?

Many lung cancers won’t cause symptoms until they spread. However, it’s vital that you schedule a consultation at Compassionate Oncology Medical Group if you experience:

  • Persistent cough
  • Chest pain with breathing
  • Shortness of breath
  • Recurrent pneumonia or other lung infections
  • Coughing up rust-colored phlegm or blood

If you have risk factors for lung cancer, such as a family history or a history of smoking, regular chest X-rays can identify changes in your lungs that may pinpoint lung cancer in the early stages. Preventive screenings help you get the treatment you need before cancer can spread.

What lung cancer treatments are available?

Your lung cancer treatment plan depends on the type you have, the stage, and where it has spread.

Compassionate Oncology Medical Group offers advanced lung cancer treatments, including precision oncology therapies. Dr. Eshaghian customizes a care plan to your individual needs and may use one or more therapies like:

  • Supplemental oxygen
  • Radiation
  • Chemotherapy
  • Radiofrequency ablation
  • Immunotherapy
  • Tumor removal surgery

While there’s no known cure for mesothelioma, Dr. Eshaghian will work closely with you on a treatment plan to improve your quality of life and increase your life expectancy. Your plan may involve immunotherapy, chemotherapy, and surgery, depending on the stage of your mesothelioma.
