Prostate Cancer Treatment Q & A

What is prostate cancer?

Prostate cancer develops in the prostate, a gland below the bladder that makes some of a man’s semen fluid. When cells in the prostate begin growing out of control, it can result in cancer.

There are several types of prostate cancer, including small cell carcinomas and transitional cell carcinomas. However, prostate cancers are adenocarcinomas in most cases, meaning that cancer develops in the gland cells responsible for making prostate fluids contributing to semen.

Unfortunately, some prostate cancers grow quickly and can spread outside of the gland. For this reason, it’s important to schedule routine prostate cancer screenings, even if they don’t have any unusual symptoms.

Prostate screenings are vital for men over 50, men of African American descent, and those with a personal or family history of cancer.

You also need a prostate cancer screening if you have symptoms like:

  • Difficulty urinating
  • Low urine output
  • Erectile dysfunction
  • Unexplained weight loss
  • Blood in your urine or semen

Compassionate Oncology Medical Group offers diagnostic testing and routine screenings for prostate cancer to reduce your risk for serious and potentially life-threatening health complications.

How is prostate cancer diagnosed?

During a routine prostate cancer screening, Dr. Eshaghian performs a digital rectal exam to identify physical changes in the shape, size, and texture of your prostate.

He might also order blood work to check for prostate-specific antigens (PSA), a substance your prostate gland makes naturally. High levels of PSA can indicate you have inflammation, infection, or cancer in the prostate.

Any abnormalities that Dr. Eshaghian finds during your screening will require additional testing, such as an ultrasound or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI).

Dr. Eshaghian will also stage your cancer to determine how advanced it is and if it’s spreading outside of the gland.

What does prostate cancer treatment consist of?

The founder of Compassionate Oncology Medical Group, Robert Lebowitz, MD (Dr. Bob), is a pioneer of non-invasive treatments for prostate cancer. Patients from all over the world seek the practice’s advice for managing their disease.

As the creator of the Triple Hormone Blockade® and Finasteride Maintenance® therapy, Dr. Bob holds international recognition for being a leader in clinical prostate cancer research and treatment protocols.

This proprietary treatment plan involves following a three-drug regimen then using finasteride maintenance therapy. Because the male hormone androgen stimulates prostate cancer cells to grow, lowering their levels with these medications can help shrink cancerous growths in the prostate.

If you’re not a candidate for non-invasive treatments, Dr. Eshaghian can recommend other prostate cancer treatments, including:

  • Surgery
  • Radiation
  • Cryoablation
  • Chemotherapy
